Carol Jones Workshop
October 10, 2010
Tile Quilts
In the last part of the 19th century, there was a distinctive genre of appliqué quilts made with narrow lines of background fabric showing between the appliquéd pieces. Because the narrow lines of background fabric resemble "grout" and the appliquéd pieces resemble "tiles," these quilts generally are called tile quilts. In this workshop, begin your own tile quilt with a 10”-15" block that you will prepare and begin to stitch. The emphasis will be on how a tile quilt differs from other types of appliqué and how to get started making a tile quilt rather than on how to appliqué.

The Incredible Scrappy Bargello!
Quilts made of only one shape, be it a square, diamond, triangle, hexagon, or others have been around since the beginning of quilting. Bonnie has always been amazed at how one simple unit, such as the lowly square can be used in so many different ways! Known by many names, quilts made with a simple one size square are timeless: One Patch, Trip Around The World, Sunshine and Shadow, Boston Commons, Postage Stamp, even 9 patch, 4 patch, 16 patch, etc…the fascination for quilters remains the same. The colors may change, the light/dark values may change, but a quilt made with one simple square will always stand as a testimony to the true essence of quilting...to make something with so much beauty from such odd leftovers...all from one little square! Get ready to make a BIG dent in the scrap stash!

An Artful Vase of Flowers
No patterns are used in this class and two fun things will be learned. You’ll be able to add to your repertoire a fun and easy way to scrap a background that you will be able to use for many elements of your work. As an extra incentive in this class you’ll be able to use up oodles of those scraps that you’ve been saving for who knows what! No two students work will be alike. That’s the art of it. At the end of the class you will be taught to turn your piece into a pillow without sewing on buttons or making a placket!
